New Direction: Flash Fiction

Last week I talked about how I’m taking a sabbatical from my “day job” (that was actually a night shift job) to focus on this blog, myself, and what direction to take things in. Well, I’ve been doing some thinking, and I’ve decided to focus on my creative writing. I’ve decided to start with writing some flash fiction.

What is flash fiction?

Various sources online say flash ranges from about 500 to 1500 words. Others say anything under 1,000. Either way, these are very very short little stories. Because I’m that type of dork: Short stories usually run 5,000 to 10,000. Then novellas are 10,000 to 40,000. And beyond that is typically called a novel. But it depends on who you ask.

I’ve started working on a few flash fiction stories. It has been such a different way of writing than aiming for a whole novel. Every word still counts, but in a totally different way. There is no space for long setups or running gags, but that character still has to go through their own trials and hardships. It’s compressed, but still needs that special something. There is no time to ease into knowing the character, they have to jump off the page now! It has certainly been a very different creative challenge, which has been great.

Upcoming Flash Fiction

First off, I’m submitting one of my stories to a flash fic advent calendar. If I get accepted one of my stories will be published on the blog of the person running the event as part of the calendar in December. Wish me luck?

Flash Fiction: Storytime Blog Hop

I’ve also joined a group of other writers in a storytime blog hop. We’re all going to post free flash fiction stories on our blogs on Nov 30. And each one will link to all the others. Which means lots of free stories for you.

Flash Fiction Anthology

I don’t have a title to share with you yet, but my plan is to put together the rest of my flash stories into a flash fiction anthology. It should be coming out next month, so keep an eye out for that.

As far as the new domain…

The site will be moving to its own domain, as soon as I can get one set up. Honestly, right now I keep having technical issues. Right now, there’s some problem with connecting the domain I have with the web hosting I got. Even the web host isn’t sure what’s going wrong. So that’s being a royal headache. So there’s a chance the site will be moving next week, and there is a chance it won’t be.

Author:

Creative & a little odd. Silly & thoughtful. Jacq loves the beach and books. She has loved novels since I was a little kid, and made this site to pursue her creative interests.
